AVI?DIVX on Mac OSX

Can anyone recommend a way to play .avi or DIVX movie files on a Mac (OSX, Mountailn Lion)? I called Apple technical support and they recommended the free version of DIVX 7 for Mac:

However, this had distorted audio (two voices over-lapping) on an AVI file that played perfectly on my Windows computer in Media Player Classic and a stand-alone Philips DVD player.

I also wonder if Perian which is an add-on for QuickTime would work:

Or any other suggestions.
