With the 5D, at around f/10 you start slowly losing resolution due to diffraction. The effect is negligible at f/11, and at f/16 you'll only notice if you go looking for it, but at f/22 it is noticeable.

See, e.g., the resolution graphs here:
http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1523/cat/10

Or see the comparison between f/5.6 and f/16 here (unfortunately no f/22 test available):

http://the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=810&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=0&API=3&LensComp=810&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=6

(Mouse over to alternate between f/5.6 and f/16 test images).

Additionally, for the same shutter speed, a larger aperture allows for a lower ISO and therefore less noise.

what's wrong with 16 or 22?

Why did you stop down the lens so much, you wanted the long exposures? Even in that case, you'd have been better off with ISO 100 and f/8-11.
