Histogram is an important instrument for making the image look "right". It has it's uses on many occasions, especially in studio or landscape photography. However, if one wants to go by mathematic formulas, their images will be "correct", but may lack some "punch". Here's an example:

If you look at the histogram of this image, it will be very imperfect, even though the image was developed after taking. The original image histogram was real "bad", as the image was underexposed with purpose of getting at least some detail from extremely bright highlights - which brought image's dynamic range beyound of what the camera could handle comfortably.

In my everyday image taking practice i don't pay too much attention to histogram - just go by my eye and feel, but find it very helpful at image development stage.

Everyone can do it - some do it well. But nobody is perfect.
