Now i know. Many thanks. I had dug around in the D300 manual and couldn't find an explanation.

With built in flash, camera will not take a shot until the flash is ready. With flash in hot shoe, camera will take the shot even if fash is not ready. That is how Nikon did it. Nothing more to it than that.
