These were taken with the 180mm f/3.5 macro and an R1. Apologies for the reposting.

I'm not saying that it doesn't work, ever. But if used as the only light and mounted on the lens, the lightning effect is approaching the "deer in the headlights" with increasing working distance. If you want softer side-light that mostly works good for macros, you need to scale-up both the size of the diffuser/bouncer and the distance from the axis. I mean like the setup in the first post here
