Use the R1C1 all the time

With the diffusers mounted and pointed inwards, you can really effectively light something that's only two or three inches from the front of the lens.

The 180mm 3.5 had filter rings of 72mm, which is a lovely size for the R1C1, a standard mounting ring. 77mm pretty much tops it out, though, the 77mm mounting ring has almost no metal on it showing.

I may fiddle around a bit with an alternative approach I have in mind. For tripod work with flash, I have an Alien Bees ringflash that I can use. The reflectors and diffusers are such that you really don't get much light until you're about a foot to a foot and a half away, but that right there is in the ballpark of the 180mm f2.8's closest focusing distance.
