Feelings and thoughts on HDR photos.

I've tried them and I'm torn. I can actually make a singe image look almost like an HDR image but not quite.
I'm always faced with the same problem. I guess I have to decide what I'm trying to convey to the viewer. I usually shoot outdoor landscape and architecture, and after a lot of PP I realize that, if the person looking at the photo would then go to the site where the photo was taken, they would see that photo and the site where the photo was taken are not the same.
Sure the photo looks great sometimes, but I guess I have to decide what I'm trying to say with the photo.
I know this has been discussed ad nauseum. Just looking for more opinions.
