Sigma 180mm macro - 1.4x converter vs tubes
Sep 3, 2012

After playing with the lens straight, and finding it to be sharp, sharp, sharp (and heavy, heavy, heavy) I tried it with the 1.4x teleconverter, to see what I get in extra reach in the macro range, and to see if it changes the lens' performance in any unacceptable way. It doesn't, really - slows the AF down a bit, hunts a bit more, but that's to be expected with the light loss of a teleconverter.

Today I tried out the lens mounted on a 32mm Kenko extension tube. WAY better. Focus is just as fast as without, image quality is better (although with the 1.4x, it's still quite good - the difference is really nit-picky...), and I got much bigger magnifications. Examples below...

The images that say 250mm were shot with the 1.4x converter mounted. The ones that say 180mm were shot with the extension tube.

It's an excellent lens.
