Grad Photos

I am taking some senior pictures for a friend. The school yearbook requires some certain specs for the photos like 300 dpi, head can only be 1 1/2 inches long in the photo etc. What is the best way to go about meeting these requirements? Is there a certain way that I need to shoot the pictures or is this something that is taken care of in processing??
