Not happy with my roses

I frequently see superbly crisp images of flowers on this site and thought I might try to do the same. However, I was not happy with the results with my NEX C3 and kit zoom as below:

So I took a few more with my Canon S90 and although lacking the crispness I was after the results look better to me:

Are my old eyes deceiving me? Is the difference insignificant? I would be glad to hear views.
