Well, if you have a 500 sq.ft. room then a pair of a/c powered studio strobes would be a no brainer, in my humble opinion. Not knowing your budget, I would say a pair of Alienbee 400's (or other brand equivalent) and a radio trigger would be a decent setup. For small object photography one of those 'light tents for product photography' would do nicely, assuming that is the type of result you are looking for, and the AC strobes could easily provide the light for that tent.

You can go the speed-light direction if you want a mobile setup, but you can get more bang for your buck with A/C strobes if you don't mind being tethered to a power outlet.
