no, the idea of the remote is that you are able to take the picture when the moment presents itself and not have to use the self timer. The self timer is used to stop blurry images from the user toughing the shutter release button. Sometimes a remote can be very handy for instance when taking long exposures of cars you may need the shutter to be ready at any moment and can't afford to wait before the photo is taken and you have missed the moment but other times for instance city scapes the self timer if fine. Canons most basic remote only costs $20 on B&H, for such a small price its probably worth it.
