300mm f4 af-s questions

Hello... I am new to the site and have a few questions regarding the 300mm f4 af-s lens. I am fairly new to photography and have been been getting some decent pictures so far. I recently purchased a D300 with and 18-200 lens. I am looking into getting the 300 f4 lens for wildlife pictures and BIF pictures. I am wondering what your thoughts are on this lens for these applications. I will probably add the 1.4tc too once I save up some more funds.

I found a guy who is relatively close that is selling this lens for $975 and says the lens is practically new and has only been used a handful of times and he is the original owner. This is a US model and not a gray market version. He also has a Nikon tc-14e af-s teleconverter for sale for $325 (gray market).

Here are my questions...
Is this a good lens for BIF and wildlife??? I don't want to spend over a $1000
Is this a good price on this lens??
Is that a good price for the teleconverter???
