You have three options for the drive North

  • West Coast - through New Plymouth, offering good views of Mt Taranaki, a classic snow covered (normally cloud covered) volcano. There is also a stunning but not on many maps which runs North just inland.

  • Centre. Crosses the Central Plateau. More volcanic scenery and very wild countryside. The road up to the plateau follows the Rangitikei River valley. Also very picturesque.

  • East. The road goes through Napier, a must for anyone interested in architectural photography. One of the world's classic art deco cities.

The latter two roads join at Taupo, where there is a huge lake. Nearby are the thermal areas - several of them - offering amazing photos of steam, bubbling mud etc etc.

There are many other possibilities but these give you some ideas. Hope that helps.
