Looking for a little bit of help.

Bit of a silly question here, but I’m a new student starting school next week and for one of the classes I’m required to have a 35mm camera. My step-dad came to me today because he wanted to give me something that I could “possibly” use.

And since it was made back in the 1950’s, he has no idea what condition it’s actually in. It’s called a Voigtlander Vitessa. It’s quiet the odd one, that I must admit and it’s also a rangfinder which I’m not sure If that’s a good idea or not to start with for someone who has never done film before. If any of you have ever used this camera or could at least give me your honest opinion if I should even bother with this or not, I would appreciate the feedback. So, with that said, what do you think?
