Here's an explanation and sample from CNET.
The camera takes 2 images in quick succession, identifies the background, electronically blurs it and then merges it with the foreground subject to form a single image.
Obviously, the degree to which it works depends on the distance the subject is from the background.
I might add that it does all this in the space of a 1-2 seconds!!!
