First, thank for your nice and detailed replies

Oh it's not too much really. You'll want to make it natural and perhaps supernatural, but all you do is think of it like a multiple-exposure. Try to be tame with your flashes so that the difference is less extreme. And really the best thing to do is use "Layers".
I plan to take those pictures in 2 weeks, but meanwhile I will train here in Tokyo, in some similar looking area. Let's see what I can do already and I will share those first results with you.
Since this is a rather specific kind of artform, I would suggest using shadows & highlights on each layer to manage the exceptional difference in you sitting in the light and the background being not well lit. Then you would simply mask away or erase the parts that don't matter. Generally with a very loose soft brush, but you should experiment with tight strong brushes too so that you can make your own kind of starburst effects (if you wish). Any effects you want can be masked away in seconds. I prefer masking versus erasing since it is infinitely forgivable, versus erasing which is once and done.
Okay. Again, I will experiment, but I would like to get a natural look. I am not sure how a "starbust" effect would look like though, do you have examples of such photos?
TTL on the Flash, set your camera for the same settings as you are using for the building (You can enhance it slightly by using Aperture Priority at f/5.6 for YOU! and f/9,10,or 11 ish or even 14 for the building. This will help YOU be really sharp and defined, but reduce the background crap in your flash shot. But play around; because you might find that a not so definate YOU is far more preferable.
Sounds really easy
Yes, you can master the flashes with the camera and you should. Both Sb-900s should be slave mode.
I was a Canon shooter before, using a 7D and a good flash. The problem I had though is that the master flash (internal one) was flashing as well and it was present on the picture (resulting in horrendous lens shades in some case). That's why I am afraid of using my D800 internal flash in master.
Would it be okay if you messaged me when you did some of your work?
I would like to see it. Just click my name & PM me and let me know.
I'm interested in how your art turns out.
Okay, let's do that, of course I'm more than willing to share my work with you! Do you have flickr by any chance?
