The reason mobile devices are being adopted at such high rates is because they are what computers should have always been. The only reason the masses had to suffer through computers that were laptops, and before that, desktops, is because we couldn't make them any smaller.

The tablet is the natural form factor for a human intelligence tool because it goes all the way back to Moses and earlier. It's why traditional books are tablet-sized.

Oh sure, sometimes you need a large working surface. That's why we had traditional desks. That means today's desktop monitors are still too small. But we know LCD TV screens are finally available in desk-like sizes at affordable prices. The wave of the future is probably a tablet that can wirelessly drive a large screen as an external monitor, and the current implementation of that is an iPad driving a flatscreen TV through Apple AirPlay. This is the closest electronic approximation of when people used a paper notebook with a desk 50 or 200 years ago.

A person who thinks that a desktop tower or laptop is the ideal form of a computer has a very narrow view of human history (only roughly the quarter century from 1980-2005). To make fun of mobile as a "useless toy" is to disregard how much human activity happens away from a chair. Who really thinks it's a good idea to dismiss the value of networked computing to that huge segment of daily (and economic) activity?
