A lot of this depends on what kinds of condition you shoot under. As your modifiers get bigger, wind becomes more of a problem. Big modifiers do give you softer light for full length shots, but you need a big heavy light stand, sandbags and under most conditions an assistant to hold on to the light stand to make sure a gust of wind doesn't tip it over. If you have an assistant hold the pole, it should not be a problem to get an assistant to hold on to the light stand. Big modifiers are also not as easy to move around to different locations.
Personally, I don't use anything bigger than a 24x36 softbox outdoors, usually on a pole. On windy beaches, I sometimes can't use any modifiers at all.
