I suspect you had an issue with the board that was pre-existing and only diagnosed upon attempt at firmware upgrade.
This is what I thought. I am not jumping to conclusions but maybe Nikon trying to make a quick buck here.
Do you work as a technician, as you seem sure that bumping cable plugged into the camera but disconnected from the laptop, would not fry the PC board?
As the customer, I have no choice but to pay up and can't question the reasoning behind replacing the board.
