I really think its unlikely that Nikon would hold a production ready model for a year, by that time it is already obsolescent. Having spent the money on R&D they would want to cash in. My own feeling is that the D300s production facilities went to the D800 (which is produced in similar volumes to the D300) originally planned to be in Thailand and since moved to Japan. This makes sense because the D800 and D300 share the same basic construction, and possibly alloy chassis models require some different assembly to polymer chassis models.

Just to add to what you say, the D700 was "made in Japan" (at least mine was) while the D300s was made in Thailand. The D700 is much closer to a D300s than a D800 so Nikon has a history of assembling similar cameras in different facilities. Of course where all the different sub-assemblies are made is quite a different matter.
