Similar to you, I was very happy running Windows XP and was reluctant to upgrade the OS. I even bought Win7 when it was first introduced at the introductory sale price of $20. But I never upgraded to it.
In December 2011, my WinXP PC died. I decided to bite the bullet and build a new PC and install the copy of Win7 that I had. I installed a SSD for my system drive and installed Win7, 64bit. WOW! WHAT A DIFFERENCE! My new PC boots so fast
Do yourself a favor and buy/build the most modern PC you can afford and install a SSD for your system drive and load Windows 7 on it. Win7 is compulsory if you run a SSD.
Upgrade and step into the future. You won't regret it.
Wow Sky, thanks a lot. I have a couple old HP printers/scanner that I'd like to keep. I also use Office 2000 and CS2 which is old. Nice to know I would not lose them with W 7. SSD, yes I've heard about them and sounds like the way to go for OS and most apps. I think all of my apps, about 15, would fit easily on a 128GB SSD. Yes, sometimes I have to be dragged into the future, kicking and screaming . If I can't easily fix my PC, which is running ok for now, I'll probably do exactly as you have.
Thanks again - Tom
