Nikon 200-400mm NC filter and protective glass

I question that you are correct that the front element on the 200-400mm is meniscus. Mine looks to be prefectly flat and neutral optically. I don't think Nikon has ever referred to it as meniscus, only as "protective glass".

The 500mm and 600mm (and perhaps other Nikon long primes) have meniscus front elements, and I assume that is the reason they are not removable.

You are correct. Te front element on the 200-400VR is removable and not part of the optical formula, whereas that's not the case on the other lenses you reference.
