Close enough to design a prototype and then fudge the numbers to please the Canon crowd.

Fortunately , lens design does not work the way you suggest
and if a compromise would be done it would have to be done the other way around

Yea right. That's why Sigma never made a lens for 4/3 or µ4/3 from the ground up. The 105 and 150 were FF carry over. The 70-300 Olympus, also a FF carryover. The 30/1.4, 19/2.8 and 30/2.8 designed with APS-C in mind.

If I had to bet, I'd say that any future Sigma lenses for µ4/3, would also be APS-C carryover.

BTW, G1X sensor size is close enough to 4/3's that any lens manufactured for one could be perfectly adapted to the other. Lens tolerances allow for such number fudging.
