Airshow with 60D: what did I do wrong?

Hi folks.

Yesterday, I was at an Airshow for the very first time in my life (and I'm turning 48 soon). I took with me my 60D and the 70-300mm L lens, which I both bought about 5 weeks ago.

About the weather: a few minutes earlier, it had been raining, so the sky was still overcast; at the same time, it was quite bright, and later, there were even blue patches in the sky and a little bit of sun occasionally. I had both ISO and WB on automatic and shot mostly in Tv mode, and I tried different exposure times (from 1/4000 to 1/500 sec). But why did so many pictures turn out so badly? I only shot Jpgs, and these shots are SOOC. Mainly, the airplanes are just black silhouettes in the sky (picture no 6 shows what the colours on picture 5 should be).

Your help is much appreciated.

Cheers,
Kurt
