I use a program that names my photos according to the actual shutter count, and was always 100% accurate.
But my D80 somehow reset the actual shutter count causing me my first duplicate photos in many years.
I contacted Nikon to see if there was something I could do to correct the shutter count and they told me something to the effect that.
There are many things in the firmware that can cause that to happen and they had no idea how to correct the count.
So I guess you answer is not always.... at least that d80 of mine reads about 7000 actuations less than it should.
