Interestingly I've just come back from St. Petersburg. I used a 50D with 15-85mm EF-S IS. I did have a 10-22mm EF-S with me, but didn't use it as when going around the palaces/cathedrals/museums as I didn't want to be carrying an extra lens around and changing frequently.

The 15-85mm IS on the 50D is pretty close in range to the 24-105mm IS on the 5D so that's what I'd suggest. It would have been nice a few times to have a wider lens, but the extra flexibility (and IS on the long end) makes the 24-105mm a better bet if you're just taking the two lenses. I think you'd be wanting to swap lenses too frequently if you took the 17-40mm.
