The E-PL2 is an excellent backup camera and excellent for video within its limits. It has a 2x crop factor but with internal optical stabilization you need to use 2x the shutter speed that you use with your DSLR (no lens stabilization and no way to brace the camera properly). It is good up to 150mm focal length but for longer than that use the Nikon.

The Olympus is very good up to ISO 1600 but the lenses are slow at f5.6 so it is not great low light camera. The picture settings and internal flash that pops up and away from the camera are both fantastic and far better than 99% of the P&S cameras I have used.

For Africa I would take a 80-400mm VR lens and rent it if you do not want to buy a copy. The 200-400mm is a more expensive alternative.
