Photo backup strategy - New Amazon Glacier product, cheap cloud storage

Hi Everyone,
I don't have a good strategy for backing up my photos. I'm thinking that I should have a backup on an external hard drive accessable in my house, and have another backup somewhere outside my house. Cost is an important issue for me. I'm guessing that I have about 500GB of photos right now, growing quickly. I'm thinking I can probably get 1TB external driives for what, about $80? I have thought of services like Carbonite as well, but balked at the $59/year. What do you folks do?
I just saw an article for a new backup Service called Amazon glacier. Maybe this would be good for people that don't have really large amounts of data to store?
"It’s a new uber-low-cost storage service for people who just want a place to dump their data without having to worry about it. Pricing starts at a crazy-low $0.01/GB/month."
I wonder if they have a minimum monthly fee?
