Question about JPEG degradation & Lightroom

I'm using Lightroom 4.

When I open and edit a JPEG in the program, but use the Export command to create a new file with the changes, is this degradating the original image at all? Or does Lightroom just copy the original and apply the changes to it, making the new image the lossy one?
