Fortunately for me, I shoot my 5D3 most of the time now, and not my 7D, so I have the option of C modes which suit my needs.

Just to be clear, I'm not disagreeing with you, I was explaining how the 7D and others before it work and what the rationale is for having C1/2/3 return to their Registered settings each time you switch away from them.

Making this behaviour customisable was clearly the right thing to do - what a pity the new 7D firmware didn't implement the same improvement.
