MC 58mm f1.4 Assembly Question
Aug 21, 2012

Hey All,

New here, and had a question about a lens I got. Purchased a MC 58mm 1.4 from a thrift store for a song, as the aperture blades were frozen open. Disassembled it, cleaned the blades, and got everything moving again. It is about 95% assembled, but the only real issue I have is that I have 5 thin spacers and 5 ball bearings. The curvature seems to match the curvature of the secondary ring of the black bayonet ring (has a stepped down section towards the "top" or bayonet side. I have looked at a couple of different disassembly pages, but either they say "Don't take out the short screws" (not helpful for me at this stage), or don't address this. Anyone know exactly how this all fits back together? Best shot of the outside is http://www.pbase.com/pganzel/image/88732566 , and inside http://www.pbase.com/pganzel/image/88732508 , except these are for the 1.2, as the spring attaches inside what is black on this picture.

On a secondary part, is it truly needed? The aperture ring is on (with its own ball bearing), so it allows me to step it down (same as if it is off-camera), even when mounted. I know when it "fires" the shot, it also "fires" the aperture via the bayonet. Only two downsides I see are there is a bit of dust able to get into the spring area, and the viewfinder would be a bit darker than fully open, and then only closing when taking a picture. Does the bayonet have to do with getting a good "lock" to the camera?

I can get pictures of this if it would help anyone.
