best video editing software for windows?

I recently made the switch back to Windows after using my 2009 Macbook. Not that I have anything against either operating system- they both have their blessings and quirks- but it was a decision based on more hardware for less money with Windows.

Anyhoo, the nice thing about Mac is that my decision would've been easy- Final Cut- but since I can't do that now, could you guys break down how you view the following software (pros/cons, overall appeal over competitors) and which you recommend that I might not have considered. Mind you, I have and am going to do my own research and will do the free trials, but since they're expensive I want all the opinions I can get.

Avid- seems to be the most popular choice on Windows

Sony Vegas- I don't really know what the pros and cons are.

Adobe Premiere- best for special effects with After Effects but still competitive otherwise

Grass Valley- ??
