I have two suggestions. One is the Rick Steve's book on Ireland. The other is to have a general route in mind and make a reservation at a B&B for the first night. Then discuss with the innkeeper what you would like to see the next day. They will give you very good information and generally make a reservation for you for the following night. If you do not have a reservation, you will need to stop traveling and sight seeing at about 3:00PM and start looking for a place to stay. With a reservation, you can keep going until about 6:00 PM. We took two trips this way and it worked quite well. You can google B&B's in Ireland and a phone call to them is not expensive from the US. By the way, Rick Steves recommends traveling the coast clockwise, as opposed to counterclockwise as the tours do. You avoid the tourbuss traffic and since Ireland is righthand drive, the view is better that anyway. We didn't plan our trips too intensively, but had a general plan and enjoyed discoveries along the way.
