Large hoverflies
Aug 18, 2012

I have a bush that is covered in pale violet/blue flowers which seem to be irresistable to hoverflies of the genus Volucella. So far I have photographed two different species feeding on the flowers.

1. The hornet imitating hoverfly is the biggest hoverfly in the UK, about 25mm long.

3. This one is slightly smaller, about 15-20mm.
