Bokeh at midrange?

Hello guys, I've seen some wonderful shots of people taking pictures of their friends across the table and it creates beautiful bokeh.

I'm running into an issue w/ f/2.0 on the X100.

I get my subject (wife) in focus but the bokeh behind her just isn't that strong. If I do a macro shot COMPLETELY upclose is when I get better Bokeh, is there any way around this or is it just the limitations of the camera's lens? I'm guessing I'm doing something wrong, I get the best bokeh when I'm right up on the subject but in this case it's not like I can take a picture of her just her ear or something haha. Thanks guys.
