Sigma Foveon sensor banding fingerprint is fixable in firmware and post processing
Aug 17, 2012

Sigma Foveon sensor banding affects the following cameras:

  • Sigma DP1 Merrill

  • Sigma DP2 Merrill

  • Sigma SD1

  • Sigma SD1 Merrill

The good news is that the banding is not random noise. It is a unique sensor "fingerprint" that is identical on every image from the same camera. That means it can easily be removed in updated firmware, or in post processing (PP). All that is required is calibration of the sensor with an image of the "fingerprint". Then, either the firmware or PP software can subtract the banding "fingerprint" from every image the camera produces.

The fingerprint removal process can be done immediately in the camera, or it can be at any time in the future. In other words, images with banding on them are not ruined. You can fix them whenever you get around to it, or you can just wait for Sigma to release a sophisticated firmware update that does it for you automatically.

A detailed description of the problem is here:

Instructions for removing the fingerprint in post processing are here:

Going forward, we should find out if Sigma is willing to fix this in firmware, or if they can update their Sigma Photo Pro (SPP) post processing software to handle it instead. Either solution would probably be acceptable, but I think it ought to be done in firmware if Sigma wants to keep any hope of their Foveon raw files being supported someday in other post processing software like Adobe Lightroom.

The "fingerprint" may change over time, so until we know that for sure, it should be assumed that it needs to be updated on a regular basis so it can be reliably removed. Once again, that is a good task for the camera firmware to handle.
