Actually, they are not the same. Power save must be 'on' enough to monitor button presses - that has to maintain some power usage. If the camera was really off, button presses would be ignored. That battery drain is very small, but not zero.

I don't recall any significant drop (95% to 80% in 12 hours) like that in other Canon cameras. I've put a my XTi and 50D away for a week or more in Auto power off, and not had drained batteries.
