More input, for those that are asking ...
I haven't decided between UWA and 'normal' wide angle yet ... I guess that is the core of my question. Although I will certainly have occasional uses for both focal ranges (i.e. the restaurant shot one poster mentioned, or architecture as mentioned by several folks), my day-to-day photography is landscapes. That's where the lens would get used regularly.
As I mentioned originally, I will wind up doing a test rental for any lens before laying down the purchase price - I can evaluate the technical merits of particular lenses at that point. My bottom line is that I don't want to rent a particular focal range and find that it stays in the bag because the focal range is not useful in my day-to-day work.
What I seem to be hearing is that the UWA is a good starting point, and the gap between the UWA and my existing 35-70 could be filled by recomposing slightly.
