Opinion on SLR/n vs other options

I've had better luck w/ LR 4 than previous versions. Did use PhotoDesk from time to time but it won't open any more and not going to bother to try to find out why. RPP does a good job I but don't find the interface all that user friendly...need to spend more time w/ it. Wondering if you have any starting point settings for RPP (contrast, black point, etc.) that seem appropriate for processing Kodak RAW files? One of the best things about LR is the ability to easily create & access presets as starting points in work flow.
