Perhaps the ideal solution would be to carry 2 point and shoots. One wide angle to normal focal length, the other normal to telephoto focal length. Together they would weigh substantially less than one slr. And they would provide all the focal length capacity of a slr with at least 2 zooms. They could be carried in a small case.
