Will telephoto ever be viable on NEX?
Aug 16, 2012

The two main mirrorless systems are micro 4/3 and NEX. They both have advantages and disadvantages but the main advantage of micro 4/3 right now is that it offers much superior options for telephoto lenses. There are a lot of lenses with more coming soon. Right now all NEX has is the 55-210 and 18-200mm slow zooms. Plus those zooms are about as long as one can reasonably use handheld on a camera that size. It just seems like the size requirement for lenses covering an APS-C image circle make telephoto photography difficult for the NEX system.

Is this ever going to change? Will engineers be able to bend the laws of physics to create more reasonably sized and possibly faster telephoto lenses? Or will it be enough for NEX users to rely on high resolution (possibly 36MP in the future) to make tight crops and engineer a telephoto image that way?
