I think speed was the primary issue. While I haven't done a full test of the combo, I did put the 1.4 on my 50-200 yesterday, turn on IS and try to shoot a bit faster. I'm mostly happy with the results. Ultimately, I think I'll be more judicious with the 1.4 -- only using it when there's tons of light.
