NEX-7 video mode HDMI output for recording
Aug 15, 2012

I've been trying to find out if NEX-7 HDMI output in video record or LiveView mode is "clean" - by which in this case I mean greater than 8 bits/R G B channel color depth, and 4:2:2 or better color sub-sampling.

Signals tend to come from the sensor in such a state (or better) but AVCHD recording nukes them. Some cameras, notably Nikon D800 and D4, have the "clean" HDMI output and Canon 5D MkIII does not. The clean output is usually recorded via ATOMOS Ninja 2 or Sound Devices - PIX 240 HDMI recorders with low-loss pro codecs, essentially letting you realize color and exposure manipulation advantages we're used to getting from still images in the raw format.

I am getting more of my actor clients asking for some videos and I need to do seriously better than this first footage of mine.

Unfortunately NEX7 is classified squarely as a consumer product (never mind its actual potential), and their consumer approach is the less the customer knows beyond the manual, the fewer questions they ask, the less trouble they get into, and thus the lower their support is. It makes sense but very tactically as it weakens the brand and devalues some of the tech advantage their engineers have busted their butts to achieve.
