I went Tamron as the VC is pretty amazing. If you have a very steady hand you can get sharp shots at 300mm at 1/40 sec. I'm over the moon with the Tamron and have no complaints with buying it. ThatNikonGuy 'Matt Grainger' said the VC on the Tamron 70-300 VC was better than Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR, that's what swung my decision. I don't think you can go wrong with either lens but for the money, the Tamron is excellent.

Here are a couple of recent photo's with my Tamron 70-300 VC. The blue and yellow birds were shot at through a fence at the Welsh Mountain Zoo

I forgot to mention these were all shot with Raw and no sharpening added to any of them just white balance and slight exposure tweaks.
