DMC-FZ50- The Cult Following
Aug 14, 2012

From what I'm gathering on this camera so far, the reasons why this camera has a "cult" sort of status, is because of the following (please feel free to comment about my list or add/subtract anything you'd like):

1. Lens- Leica glass, excellent optical IQ low distortions all around, good macro ability, versatile overall range, relatively fast max aperture through the range, internal zooming, smooth focus and zoom rings, takes filters, lenses, and a hood like a DSLR

2. Handling- From pix I've seen, I love the button placement choices, rubber thumb rest, big grip, balance overall including when zooming

3. LCD- Swivels even for selfers, decent enough even by todays standards for resolution and glare protection, great for macro work and any other high/low angle work.

4. Battery Life- Excellent battery capacity/life

5. Build- Build quality is at a higher level (much like high end m4/3 bodies from Pana)

6. EVF- Very decent, big view, low lag, holds its own against some evfs produced today

7. IQ- Raw excellent at 100 ISO, very good to 400 ISO, useable 800 ISO, Jpegs ok if staying low in ISO's and back off on sharpening etc

8. Features- Pretty feature packed, good all around army knife kind of package, and very decent video with silent zooming (huge plus)

9. Focusing- Fast and accurate focusing, af assist lamp, good manual focus mode with magnified view etc.

10. X Factor- Sum total of all its plusses handily outweigh its biggest weakness (in comparison to new cameras) IQ, which can be worked around if you are patient and dont mind doing your own processing. Overall a very fun camera to use because of quality, handling, and features.

Did I miss anything?

Carl
