Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 vs. Zeiss 18mm f/3.5
Aug 14, 2012

I am considering buying a Zeiss 18mm f/3.5 to complement my Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 and I am thus reading with great interest comparisons between these lenses. The reviews on photozone.de seems to indicate that the Nikkor at 17mm is better than the Zeiss as far as resolution at f/5.6 is concerned, except in the corners:

Nikkor at center: 4029 (4000 is the high-end of "excellent" and 3460 its low-end)

Zeiss at center: 3357 (3700 is the high-end of "excellent" and 3200 its low-end)

Nikkor at border: 3254 (3460 is the high-end of "very good" and 2920 its low-end)

Zeiss at border: 2769 (3200 is the high-end of "very good" and 2700 its low-end)

Nikkor at corner: 2758 (2920 is the high-end of "good" and 2380 its low-end)

Zeiss at corner: 2732 (3200 is the high-end of "very good" and 2700 its low-end)

I understand the reason for the different LW/PH ranges for "excellent", "very good" and "good" result from the use of different bodies (D3X for the Nikkor and 5D MkII for the Zeiss).

I wonder if anyone who has both can comment on the photozone.de results and my interpretation of them ...

Thanks for your feedback !
