On the positive side: you got a good model there, and a decent camera.

But otherwise it's not that great of a portrait.
here a few things to improve:

  • look for a better background. Either something interesting, a pattern, etc. or just something creamy and out-of-focus. also, open your aperture all the way.

  • It looks like you used straight on-camera flash. Don't do that. Use it off-camera, e.g. 45° to the left.

check out strobist.com for some inspiration.
