Well, in my own defense, this is certainly not my first rodeo having owned the D100, D200 and D300 before the D800, so inexperience to photography in general is not at fault. I simply do not take many fireside photos, and on those rare occasions when I have in the past, I don't recall this heat shadow happening in the past. The explanation of shutter speed and flash use was welcome commentary; the misplaced epithet hurled my way was not! Thank to my defenders here- I've read what, given my body of knowledge, appear to me to be very basic and naive questions posed by seemingly experienced photographers before. I always make a point to share my knowledge, not belittle those who may know less than me.
