New gear protection plan, your thoughts

I just purchased a $2000 lens from a local camera shop, and the salesman was very aggressively trying to get me to a protection plan for it. The five year cost was almost 70% of the cost of the lens. It covered everything except fire and theft, which just happens to be what concerns me the most!

The sales pitch went on....the number one point he was making was, I could get this thing cleaned for free at any time, and that alone would pay for itself.

I'd like to hear some experiences of people who have used this, and or anybody who has some inside knowledge so that I can make a better informed decision.
